Aquasafe has to be used to keep the chlorine out of the water, and protect the weed.
We have 2 ponds both substantially above ground level. The larger one is mixed (Orfe,Tench,Sarasas,Koi etc) and the other holds more or less large Koi.For many years we have had plenty of surface weed that the fish and the frogs love. They sunbathe in it,resting on the thick stems of the watercress, and it has given so much pleasure to see the fish weave in and out as it grows.Every Winter we cover the ponds and by the Spring the weed has drastically reduced in size. However by the Summer there is plenty of healthy growth and the duckweed then joins in.The Koi spawn in the weed, and we have so many youngsters of goldfish it is too much really.Sadly last year we decided to stop using dechlorinators, mainly through the expense, but the fish seemed to thrive just the same, however the weed started to disappear. It turned yellow and reduced in size quite dramatically. In fact there is no weed in the Koi pond and just a bit in the larger pond, with plenty of cress hanging from the waterfall.Well we scratched out heads and couldn't figure it out at all,no more hide and seek for the fish!!. Now it is Winter we cover the ponds and put the heaters in,and the water feels quite warm constantly, about 12 degrees. Then I noticed the weed in the old pond wasn't turning yellow anymore but staying green, even showing growth!.I then had a eureka moment!.Of course the problem was that once the ponds were covered, we stopped adding tap water. So it was the chlorine interfering with the weed. The problem was solved. Why oh why did we stop the Aquasafe?.....we said this over and over to ourselves. Now we can add Aquasafe AND put the hose in the ponds safely.Well I may as well not bother in the pond that is denuded of weed, but the larger one will definitely have a good dose of Aquasafe to keep the precious weed safe until the Spring and the covers come off..Such a simple solution to a head scratching problem.
