Ella Bella Ballerina and Swan Lake

We had tickets to take our grand daughter (8) to the ballet for the first time and bought this for her prior to the big day so that she would have an idea of what the story was about. Told the story simply and sympathetically - she loved the book and the ballet was a wonderful success.

Following on from Ella Bella and Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, comes the story of Swan Lake. After ballet class, when Madame Rosa is telling the children about the Princess Odette, Ella Bella stays behind. As she lifts the lid of the music box and the Swan Lake music begins to play, the ballet comes alive. This is a glorious re-telling of the ballet, with the Prince pledging his love to the sorcerer's daughter by mistake and Odette leaping into the lake to escape the clutches of the sorcerer. When the Prince follows, the spell is broken and true love destroys the sorcerer's magic. The magic of the story ends safely with a Happy Ever After and Ella Bella skipping home from dance class with her mother. These are wonderful books -simply the best introduction to ballet stories I have ever seen. I also highly recommend the other Ella Bella books and James Mayhew's brilliant Katie series, where children are introduced to art and artists. James Mayhew writes the kind of books I was hoping somebody would write for children everywhere. My three year old, ballet mad daughter, adores them.

My grand-daughter really loved this book as the story was simple and the book was beautifully illustrated. This helped her understand the story of Swan Lake when we went to see it at the London Coliseum.

Good book for a 5 year old ballerina. Would love to get the whole series.

I bought this book for my 3 1/2 year old daughter as she was starting ballet classes. I think it really helped spark her interest in ballet. After reading this book several times, I decided to let her watch parts of the ballet on TV. She clearly learned from the Ella Bella book because she was very interested in the actual ballet and asking questions about the ballerinas on TV “which one is Odette?” I am definitely going to add another Ella Bella book to her collection in the near future...I’m thinking the Nutcracker!
