Australia's healthiest export
Vegemite Vegemite 400g Jaris practically unknown in North America, but I'll bet there is no one is Australia of an ethnicity who has never heard of Vegemite, and of those who have, almost everyone will have some at home. Every restaurant and side of the road eatery carries it. It comes in tubes, jars, and little packets like jams and butter substitutes do in the US. It is Vegemite, the concentrated yeast extract spread that goes on most slices of bread or toast Down Under. Dark brown to be almost black, it has a strong taste, so if you're a novice, spread it thin. Americans who try Vegemite fall into two categories: those who hate it or love it immediately. Don't take my word for it, check it out online: there is no better sourse for B vitamins than Vegemite. If your are used to nothing other than peanut butter and jam on your bread and toast, you are ready for a change, a change for a low-calorie healthy product that you won't be able to stop talking about. It's flavour is unique; it's closest cousin is the British and New Zealand Marmite, though similar, is not the same. Ordering it in the US is more expensive than getting it Oz, but it is a sacrifce that I am happy to make just to have it on the table.

'Twas love at first bite
After being curious about Marmite and Vegemite for decades, I finally got up the nerve this January to try them both. The Marmite arrived first and, while I enjoy it, immediately got pushed to the back of the cupboard upon the arrival of the Vegemite. Oh, sweet mystery of life -- at last, I've found you! Talk about being born in the wrong hemisphere. Like several other American converts who've commented, I have to really watch myself with it, or else I'd be layering it on quite thick (or eating too much straight from the jar). My husband tried it against my advice by dipping his finger into the jar (gah!), and I wasn't surprised when he made a stink-face.If it weren't for all the sodium-induced edema (oh to be young again...), I'd eat several tablespoonsful a day. After 6 months, I somehow got my finicky husband to try it again, this time made properly on toast. Yep, I converted him, too. While my usual is on buttered multi-grain toast, I also love Vegemite in grilled cheese as well as topped with avocado (on either toast or toasted bagels). Amazing.Am I the only one who gets antsy if I haven't had Vegemite for a few days?

Good vitamin supplement, difficult for first time taste
I wanted to like this so badly. I'm sure the product, to those with "the taste for it," will delight. But my experience was as follows:-I'm in my kitchen standing over my skillet. A fresh golden-brown sourdough English muffin comes sizzling out of the pan, butter still glistening on the edges, and onto my plate.-I let the English muffin cool, but not get cold (see Goldilocks and the Three Bears story).-I open the lid to this jar. The vegemite looks delicious, like nutella.-I take a glob of vegemite on the end of my butter knife and spread it across both pieces of the muffin.-I take a bite*.-I work the bite down and begrudgingly take another.-This isn't going to work, I realize, and add a cherry jam over the top of the vegemite.-I take another bite of the English muffin that contains about equal parts/coverage jam & vegemite.-I open the lid to my trash-can, and throw the rest of the muffin away.*The taste reminded me of one of the most salt-saturated things I've tasted. And, once I agreed that vegemite ranked among the saltiest thing I had ever tasted, I sensed a secondary taste, something of a light-mushroom umami (for me).I know what this product is made from, but I thought I'd give my personal account for future buyers. This product seems very efficient as a B vitamin supplement, however, I have chosen other natural foods and drinks rich in these qualities (without the salt).Suggestion for first time tasters:Start small. Maybe you only cover a few bites of your bread or whatever with vegemite. If the taste grows on you, and you like the health benefits, enjoy!

Where's the Vege come into play?
First off the seller has nothing to do with this review, the item was delivered perfectly and way before it's ETA. Kudos to the seller for awesome business tactics. Now to the Vegemite...For years I've wanted to try this product and that was time wasted for years. This tastes horrible! So horrible in fact that it lingered in my throat for a day before the taste finally went away. I had many others try it at work and at home and no one liked it, I can't believe anyone would eat this. HahaAfter doing some research I found that it's the left over from beer manufacturing the slug that's left inside the tank. Lovely...It makes a great item on my shelf though. :)

o.O
I've been told that Vegemite is a love it or hate it sort of thing. I don't mind the yeast flavor, but it was (to my palate) overwhelmingly salty. I'm keeping it around, as I might try using it to cook with.
